Liverpool In the Market for a Striker – Werner, Osimhen and Talles Magno Linked to Anfield

Liverpool are seemingly on the hunt for a new striker, and three names have been murmured in the news recently. Three young strikers, all at different stages of their career. We evaluate their options – The Headliner, The Breakthrough Star, and The Wonderkid.

The Headliner – Timo Werner

Werner is a star. There is no doubt about it. Since bursting onto the scene in 2016 with a move to RB Leipzig, the German has dominated the Bundesliga.

An unbelievable 72 goals in 118 games, the striker has made a name for himself. But, with the dominance of Bayern Munich, Werner might not want to remain at Leipzig forever.

Showing no signs of slowing down, he has scored 21 goals so far this season, second only to Robert Lewandowski. Liverpool aren’t short of goals, but Werner is always firing. A natural goalscorer with blistering pace, he would terrorise defenders.

Werner has taken the Bundesliga by storm

German players can come cheap. Reports of a low (under £50 million) release clause would interest any club. Liverpool have been smart with transfers in the past, and the value for money on this deal could be up there with the best in the world.

But, there are no secrets in football. According to Gianluca Di Marzio:

“He will leave Leipzig for sure. His agents are working to find the best solution. Inter? There has been contact with the Nerazzurri, who are thinking about him if Lautaro to Barcelona should come to fruition. Watch out for Juventus too,”

When speaking on the Liverpool interest:

“There is no agreement. It is difficult for Werner to find accommodation in the attack of the Reds, at the moment they need nothing. There have been enquiries made but nothing has been done. ”

There’s no doubt that Liverpool have one of the best front lines in the world. But, in a time where funds are limited, is Werner an unnecessary expense?

The Breakthrough Star – Victor Osimhen

Lille striker Victor Osimhen is a bit behind Werner in terms of development, but the 21-year-old is having his breakthrough season.

He equaled Neymar this year with 13 goals in his first season in France (only 3 players have more). The season has since been cancelled, and PSG handed the crown, but the Nigerian has made his impact

Tall for a striker, Osimhen stands at 6’1″. Strong and agile, he is a tough man to get off the ball. A low centre of gravity allows a good change in direction and creates problems for opposing defenders.

It’s being reported that Lille have received a massive £75 million offer for the striker. No club has been named, but with Liverpool expressing interest, there is a chance a move has been made.

Osimhen joined Lille in 2019 – and scored 13 goals this season

At 21 years old, the youngster has a glittering career ahead of him. Adding him to the Liverpool front line, he can grow into the role and challenge the front 3 for their spots. Expensive, though, the financial situation could postpone interest in a big name for now.

The Wonderkid – Talles Magno

The third name being linked is maybe more one for the future. At just 17 years old, Talles Magno is starting to create chatter in his native Brazil.

According to reports, Liverpool have expressed an interest in the young striker.

“It is believed Vasco da Gama are willing to discuss bids for the 17-year-old, with the Brazilian club said to be already considering a proposal from Benfica.

The Portuguese side have reportedly proposed a €1m offer which would give them first option on Magno until the end of 2020.”

He sparked a level of interest when he took part in the Under-17 World Cup and scored two goals in four appearances.

Liverpool have started planning for the future. They controversially fielded their youngest side ever in an FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury in February. The side not only stood up to the test, but they actually won the game. Curtis Jones and 16-year-old Harvey Elliott were the biggest names, but it shows the youth are ready to continue the Reds top level play in the future.

Who Will it be?

These three strikers are all at different stages of their career. Ranging from the ready-made star in Werner, to the next big thing in Osmhen, all the way to a 17 year old Wonderkid. With a front three like Liverpool’s, there is no hurry in finding someone new – but it won’t last forever.
