Premier League champions Liverpool could be in the market for a new centre-back as early as January, as Klopp looks to seek cover for his injury-ridden defence. And one name that has been hitting the headlines recently is Austrian David Alaba.
Alaba is out of contract with his current side Bayern Munich in the summer. At the time of writing he is yet to sign a new deal with the German giants. The versatile defensive player has been at the club for his whole senior career, but a new challenge may be on his mind.
The 28-year-old lifted his second Champions League trophy in August. And he may see this as being the perfect time to leave on a high. Following the journey of former teammate Thiago to Merseyside, Alaba may be keen to follow suit.
Liverpool’s Defensive Struggles
Liverpool will see a defensive player as a priority. Injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have left the side with a significantly weakened defensive line, and the side have not shown the same impenetrable defence we saw in their incredible season last year. The side have shipped 16 goals this season, only 2 teams in the Premier League have worse.
And with their talismanic centre-back van Dijk potentially looking to sit out the rest of the 2020/21 season, a move in January could be on the cards for the Austrian.
David Alaba – Liverpool’s Answer?
David Alaba was once known as a left back, and one of the best in the world. His pace and defensive awareness allowed him to join the Bayern attack, as well as do his defensive job impeccably.
He was also known to be able to play in midfield. Seemingly a requirement for Bayern Munich full backs (as Philipp Lahm and Joshua Kimmich can confirm) that kind of flexibility has provided a huge amount to his club and the Austrian national side.
Recently though, the Austrian has been seen as centre back. Adapting his role, he has been able to slot into the CB position as Canadian wonderkid Alphonso Davis claims the left-back spot. According to the Bundesliga:
“[Alaba] moved into central defence out of necessity rather than choice, owing to long-term injuries to regular pairing Niklas Süle and Lucas Hernandez.”
In his own words:
“Maybe I’m playing there because I interpret the position differently than a natural centre-back would,” Alaba told Kicker.
“If you watch our last few games, you can see my presence on the pitch. That’s what I’m aiming for and trying to take these steps is part and parcel of developing.”
And a player with that type of flexibility could be perfect for Klopp’s side, with the reds also seeing injuries to full back Trent Alexander-Arnold.
David Alaba stats
Since lifting the Champions League trophy following an impressive 90 minutes at centre back against the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, Alaba has played 6 games for the Champions of Europe in the 2020/21 Bundesliga season.
All of these games have been at centre back and he has seen impressive stats. Scoring 1 goal and posted an 86% pass accuracy and 72.6 passes/game (11th in Bundesliga).
Alongside an incredible skill and still just 28 years of age, Alaba is an extremely successful individual.
- 9x Bundesliga Titles
- 2x Champions Leagues
- 3x UEFA Team of the Year
Liverpool are no stranger to Champions Leagues and league titles! But adding another player of Alaba’s pedigree, who has played at the highest level of European Football for over 10 years would be a huge addition to the squad.
Liverpool fans, would you take David Alaba?
