Chelsea Close in on Timo Werner Deal – As Liverpool Miss Out on Striker

Chelsea look set to sign German striker Timo Werner from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. The 24-year-old has a release clause of just  €55m (£49.4m), which the London side have apparently matched before its expiry on 15th June.

Werner has been on the radar of some of the biggest clubs in football, including current Premier League leaders Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp looked closest to getting the striker, and had reportedly even spoken directly to him on the phone.

But, reservations about play time, and an apparent loss in transfer budget following the postponement of Premier League football, tipped the odds in the Blues favour.

Werner has been unstoppable this season. Scoring a hat-trick in his last game behind closed doors in the new-look Bundesliga season, he has taken his total to 25 for the season.

Timo Werner Chelsea Play Style

The German striker is a bit different to the strikers Chelsea have had in recent years. Far from Álvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuaín, and Radamel Falcao, the German is quick, dynamic and a hard worker.

Described as a pressing forward, he embodies what Frank Lampard is looking to bring to Chelsea. High intensity play, with quick passing focused around the central midfield, having a pacy striker who is clinical in front of goal is exactly what the young manager needs.

Take nothing away from Tammy Abraham. The 22-year-old has proven himself to be more than capable of scoring goals. But, with just one goal against a big six side, is he enough to bring the Blues back to consistent top 4 finishes?

Werner is pushing his boundaries too. Developing his style under Leipzig manager, Julian Nagelsmann, he is able to play in more roles than just the central striker.

“Timo now has a good sense not only of letting himself attack on the wing, but also of going into the No.10 position,” Nagelsmann said, after last month’s demolition of Mainz.

“Coupled with his speed, this makes him more varied in his play and more difficult for his opponents to get to grips with him.”

This could come as good news to Abraham, and might point to the two players being used in the same line up.

Along with Matteo Kovacic and Mason Mount, Chelsea have recruited Hakim Ziyech from Ajax. Players with incredible creativity, the new striker will not be short of chances!

The Blues have also recently been linked to a deal to swap midfielder Jorginho with Miralem Pjanić from Juventus

Would Miralem Pjanić be an upgrade on Jorginho?
