Arsenal have reportedly made an offer worth £43.3 million for Atlético Madrid’s defensive midfielder Thomas Partey.
Arteta’s men have shown a strong desire to improve defensively. Under the Spaniards leadership, the Gunners have conceded 9 goals in 10 games. This is already a great improvement compared to 70 goals in 51 games under Emery.
Lucas Torreira was previously brought in for this position, but a number of injuries have stuttered his Arsenal career. It is rumoured that AC Milan are lining up a bid for the Uruguayan, freeing up funds and space for Partey. The Gunners are looking to play an improved passing style, and the Ghanaian can do just that.
He has spent his whole professional career in Madrid, and has grown into one of the top defensive midfielders in the world. Atlético are known for their ‘defence is the best form of attack’ style, and the DM position is arguably one the most important.
The London side have been interested in the midfielder for a while, but now Corriere dello Sport say they have tabled an offer.
They have also recently been linked with Dayot Upamecano. And together they could sure up the defence that has struggled recently.
Thomas Partey Stats
- 24 league appearances, 8 Champions League
- 3 goals, 1 assist
- 83.5% pass accuracy, averaging 52.6 passes/game
- Averaging 2.1 tackles/game and 1.4 interceptions/game
Thomas Partey’s Premier League Dream?
Partey still has three years remaining on his contract with Atlético. The club, however, are looking to tie him down to a new deal. His current contract is rumoured to have a low release clause.
The 26-year-old has mentioned the Premier League is a step he would be willing to take. In an interview with ESPN last year the midfielder said:
“The Premier League is a good league, it’s very competitive and has some of the best players in the world,” he added. “Hopefully, one day. I would like to play there.”
Arsenal have also reportedly been keen on signing West Ham midfielder, Declan Rice. But with interest coming from other clubs, and a hefty fee placed on the youngster’s head, a swoop for Partey may be on the cards.
