Arsenal have begun searching for a left-back, as talks with 18-year-old star Bukayo Saka stall. And, according to reports in Spain, the Gunners have enquired about signing Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilon.
Saka has had a stellar breakout season. The young Englishman has featured 18 times in the Premier League this season and provided 2 assists. Also featuring 6 times in the Europa League, Saka has contributed to an incredible 7 goals (2 goals, 5 assists).
Despite being known as an attacking player, he has found more luck in the left back position. Injuries to Kieran Tierney and Sead Kolašinac have left the spot there for the taking – and he has more than proven his worth.
But, despite huge popularity and an obviously bright future ahead, the Gunners have been unable to tie him down to a contract.
Saka remains on the professional contract he first signed aged 17.
According to 90min:
“It is due to expire at the end of next season, meaning it has little more than 12 months to run, and does not reflect his new-found status at an estimated worth of between £5,000 and £7,000 per week.”
The London side have apparently reached a sticking point with a new deal. Talks have reportedly not progressed since February, leaving many to wonder about the young star’s future. 90min go on to say there has been interested reported from Borussia Dortmund, as well as Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester City.
Chelsea and Man City – Lacking Left-Back Options
A great coup from their Premier League rivals, and a star player to boot. Saka would definitely be looked at as a sound investment for either of those clubs.
Both Chelsea and Man City have struggled to find a regular starter at left back.
The Blues have had great success with Marcos Alonso in the past. But, with his stuttering form, Lampard has turned to Emerson. But with young Englishman Reece James proving his worth on the right, maybe a swoop for Saka could work!
Similarly, City have struggled in that position. Delph, Angeliño, Zinchenko and Mendy have all, through injuries or otherwise, failed to claim the position. Aymeric Laporte filling in, Guardiola is just crying out for a young, attack-minded left back to mold into his style.
Arsenal Look to Spain
Arsenal have options in the left back position. Kolašinac has provided good support when needed, and Kieran Tierney has shown glimpses of his potential between injuries. But, with Saka featuring so heavily, losing him would be a big blow.
So Mikel Arteta has looked to his native Spain – to Sergio Reguilon of Real Madrid.
The Spaniard has spent the season on loan at Sevilla, and has quickly made a name for himself.
- 22 league appearances
- 1 goal, 4 assists
- 80.5% pass accuracy, averaging 49.5 passes/game
- 1.6 key passes/game
- 2.1 tackles per game
As the lockdown continues on, many players will come to the end of contracts sooner than you know.
We recently reported that Arsenal were interested in Thomas Partey. Arsenal fans, would you be happy to take Reguilon in exchange for Saka?
