Wayne Rooney is one of the greatest players to ever wear the England shirt, so let’s look at some of the numbers the defined the career of a Premier League and England legend.
16 – Rooney was just 16 years old when he made his debut for Everton back in 2002. 67 appearances later and 15 goals, the youngster moved Manchester United, a transfer that would see him stay there for 13 years.
5 – Incidentally, Rooney won 16 trophies at Manchester United, and included in that is 5 Premier League titles. Linking up with arguably the best manager of all time, Sir Alex Ferguson, Rooney was able to thrive in an age of dominance for the Manchester club.
208 – Playing at the top for such a long time, Rooney quickly sped through the competition for the most Premier League goals of all time. Finishing with 183 for Manchester United, and 25 for Everton (including 10 in a spectacular return to the Merseyside club in 2017/18) Rooney was able to secure second spot in the rankings only behind the great Alan Shearer.
53 – Not settling for second best, Rooney could boast being England’s all time top goalscorer. With an incredible 53 goals in 120 games, Rooney represented his country at 3 World Cups, although sadly not being able to pick up any international trophies during his England career. Harry Kane went on to break the record in March 2023 in a Euro 2024 qualifying match against Italy.
2010 – At the end of the 2009/2010 season, Wayne Rooney was awarded with the Premier League player of the season award, thanks to his 26 goals and 3 assists. Despite his incredible season, Manchester United did not actually pick up the Premier League trophy that season, being dethroned by Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea.
Growing up, Wayne Rooney was an idol to many. In an age where players were becoming fashion icons and underwear models, Rooney was the the model player. The brain of a footballer, Rooney was just as comfortable in midfield or attack and he could dribble, pass and shoot better than many of the Worlds best. Forming a partnership with none other than Cristiano Ronaldo, Rooney was able to guide Manchester United to the top of the world for a long time. In his later years drifting back to midfield, Rooney adapted to the playmaker role like a duck to water. Set pieces and spectacular bicycle kicks, he really had it all!
